THE SELECTIONS FOR TODAY
.
.

.
.

Friends, here are my selections for today's racing at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

.

I have a few of the races handicapped as I write friends. As you know, I look at eight considerations when I am constucting my system. I simply assign points and then add them up. And, what I end up with is my top five picks ( usually just four horses in a shorter field ) in order of preference. Now, the important thing about my system of course is that all of my horses can win and I bet strategically to reflect this reality. I usually try to limit my triactor betting to fourteen dollars per race, but sometimes it is more practical to bet more so as to cover more combinations. I can bet combinations all the way up to 24 dollars for example. And, if you don't mind spending even more money you can box 5 horses for sixty dollars. Boxing the top four horses would cost 24 dollars for a one dollar bet. At any rate, here are my picks for the first ten races today at the Meadowlands. These picks could change if a horse is scratched or if there is a driver change so keep that in mind.
.
Race 1: Key or box bets based on horses 6-1-5-3-2. Optional one dollar key bet: 6/1-3-4 as a back up bet
.
Race 2: Key or box bets based on horses 4-5-3-8-10. Threat Horse is number 6. How to incorporate a threat horse: bet 6/4-5 and 4/5-6 for a total of four dollars.
.
Race 3: Key or box bets based on horses 6-2-4-1. Threat horse is number 5.
.
Race 4: Key or box bets based on horses 9-2-1-4-8.
.
Race 5: Key or box bets based on horses 3-2-5-10-7. Threat horse is number 6.
.
Race 6: Key or box bets based on horses 4-1-3-8-5.
.
Race 7: Key or box bets based on horses 1-4-2-8-7. Threat horses are 5 and 10. Two threat horses in one race can sometimes mean danger as both horses represent a threat to the system.
.
Race 8: Key or box bets based on horses 7-4-10-1-3.
.
Race 9: Key or box bets based on horses 5-6-9-4-7.
.
Race 10: Key or box bets based on horses 2-7-1-3. Threats to the system are horse 4,5, and 6. Obviously my system is threatened here.
.
.
Betting Strategies:
.
As you know there are many ways to bet a race. But, one of the most important things to keep in mind of course is one's budget. It doesn't pay to get carried away in the racing game. You will usually end up losing anyway, so it is better to budget and limit your exposure. With these thoughts in mind here is a sample of how to bet my system, depending upon your mood and your budget of course.
.
Let's take a look at race number 6 for today. The Meadowlands Racing Program picks: 3-4-7. These are the top three horses according to the experts.
.
Here are my top five horses in order of preference: 4-1-3-8-5. Notice that I do not have horse number 7 in my top three picks. This fact is technically a threat to my system and for an extra fours dollars you can cover this threat if you want to spend the money doing so.
.
My normal bet is a fourteen dollar one. Here is what it would look like:
.
One dollar triactor Box ( 4-1-3 ) equals six dollars;
One dollar Key 8/4-1 and 4/1-8 equals four dollars;
One dollar Key 5/4-1 and 4/1-5 equals four dollars
.
total bets equals 14 dollars for above;
.
Here are some combinations using mostly key bets and spending more money, namely 24 dollars. This is the amount of money that I like to bet when I like a race. It is usually higher quality horses running for bigger money. In race 6 these are the combinations. Remember, these are all one dollar bets.
.
Key: 4/1-3-8,
1/4-3-8,
3/4-1-8
8/4-1
5/4-1
4/1-5
.
total above bets equals 24 dollars
.
Another option is to just box your top four horses for 24 dollars. That means that all combinations are covered based on four horses. Any three of the four horses have to be in the money to win of course. The top four horses in the sixth race are: 4-1-3-8
.
And, finally if you want to cover all of the horses in the system you can box all five of them for sixty dollars. I have never done this personally, but I can certainly see the benefits in doing so. As I stated above, there is a possible outside threat to this race and that is horse number 7.
.
.
Summary
.
Well, there you have it friends, just some betting strategies for you based on my system. Remember, my system is by no means fool proof and ANY HORSE can win any race so keep that in mind when you are betting. You should learn how to limit your bets to your risk tolerance and your ability to lose money. You can lose a great deal of money in horse racing very quickly if you do not manage your money properly and managing money is one of the tricks to the horse racing game.

How did I do today?

Friends, you can link to my morning picks for tonights racing right here:

.
And, here are the official results from the Meadowlands website for Saturday April 17, 2010:
.
.
There were a few changes and scratches on today's card. Not many of these affected my performance.
.
Race 1. Horse number 2 was scratched and this affected my selections. My top four picks were: 5-1-8-4. I did not win this race because of my handicapping methods. In a four horse field I like to keep my bets down to ten dollars, so the actual winning selection was not part of my picks. However, the winning combination ( 8-5-4 ) was part of my top four horses. So, with slightly different betting strategies this race would have been winnable for me. Either betting 18 dollars and making key bets using my top three horses as winners or by simply boxing four horses for 24 dollars would have produced a win for me. I do on occasion bet 18, 20, or sometimes 24 dollars. The point is that the top four winning horses were part of my system. I bet ten dollars in this race. My bets were: 5-1-8 triactor box and two triactor keys: 4/5-1 and 5/1-4.
.
Race 2. I won this race and I got paid $88.40 for my one dollar triactor bet. The race paid a bit more for the players in New Jersey. ( see payoffs at the Meadowlands above ) I bet 20 dollars in this race. My top five selections were: 2-3-6-5-7. I boxed 2-3-6 and keyed 5/2-3, 2/3-5, 7/2-3 and 2/3-7. I also played the optional key bet 3/2-6-7 for six dollars as a back up bet. The actual winning triactor combination was 2-3-7.
.
Race 3. I won this race and I got paid $192.15 for my one dollar bet. My five selections were: 4-6-1-2-7 and a threat horse was number 8. I bet the following way: Triactor box 4-6-1 and keys 2/4-6, 4/6-2, 7/4-6, 4/6-7 and I covered the threat with two more key bets: 8/4-6 and 4/6-8 for a total of 18 dollars. The winning triactor combination was: 4-6-1 and that was my top three picks in order of my preference.
.
Race 4. My picks were 1-2-6-8-10 and there was a threat horse namely number 7. I bet my usual 14 dollars plus another four dollars covering the threat. The winning triactor was 6-9-8 and it paid for two dollars: $827.80. Needless to say I wasn't even close to winning this one.
.
Race 5. Horse number 8 was scratched in this race, meaning that this was ten dollar betting race for me. My selections were: 7-1-3-6. I bet my usual way in a 7 horse field and I boxed the top three horses and keyed the fourth one. The bets look like this: 7-1-3 box and key 6/7-1 and 7/1-6 The winning combination was 1-7-6 and that triactor paid $155.40 for two dollars. This is another of those irritating losses friends. I have the winning numbers as you can see. The problem is that I don't really like to be more than ten dollars in a short field like this. But, as you can see if I had used the 18 dollar method ( keying the top three horses and making them all winners ) I would have won. Similarly, if I had boxed 4 horses for 24 dollars I would have won as well. This is the hard part of racing of course, when it is all over and you realize that you have the winning horses, but simply fail to bet them properly; i.e., not betting enough money. Even if I had bet the maximum amount for me ( 24 dollars ) I would have come out ahead with the one dollar triactor win. Grin and bear it I suppose.
.
Race 6. Horse number 7 was scratched in this race. My selections were: 9-6-3-2-8. I bet 24 dollars in this race. Here are my bets: Key 9/6-3-2, 6/9-3-2, 3/9-6-2, 2/9-6, 8/9-6 and 9/6-8. The winning combination was: 6-4-9. The four horse was an odd ball in this race and was 10-1 on the program. It ended up at 15-1. The two dollar triactor paid $273.00.
.
Race 7. My selections in this race were: 3-2-4-10-8 with an optional bet of 3-2-10-9. I bet 20 dollars in this race. I bet my usual 14 dollars utilizing the main five horses and I bet another 6 dollars by keying the optional bet: 3/2-10-9 ( six dollars ). The winning combination was 7-3-8 and the triactor paid $2,437.00 for a two dollar bet. So, this is a good example of how much you can make when a horse that really does not fit in makes the grade and comes in first.
.
Race 8. There were some last minute driver changes here, but that did not affect me too much. My picks in order of preference were: 5-9-2-6-1. Prior to the driver change my picks were: 5-9-6-2-1. I bet my 24 dollar keying method, which means that 5, 9, and 2 are keyed for six dollars and then backed up by the remaining horse for a total of 24 dollars. I did not win this race and the winning combination was: 6-5-1. But, this is another one of those hindsight races friends because notice that the winning horses are contained in my top five picks. Now, I sit with a fellow bettor sometimes and this person does not mind betting 60 dollars to box five horses. So, if he was copying my numbers and boxing them he would have won this triactor. It paid for two dollars: $121.20. For sixty dollars you are only getting one half of this pot, so in this case it is hardly worth the bother betting sixty dollars to basically get your money back.
.
Race 9. This was another 24 dollar betting race for me. My selections were: 5-10-8-3-7. I did not win this race and the triactor ( 7-6-2 ) paid $1470.40 for two dollars. This was basically my last bet. I wanted to stop here and protect my winnings for the night.
.
My profit for the evening was $130.00

PART ONE
.
THE SELECTIONS FOR TODAY
.
.

.

Friends, here are my selections for today's racing at the Meadowlands in New Jersey.

.

If you know anything about my system then you will understand that I look at eight considerations when determining what horses I will betting on. I assign points to my horses and then simply add up the points in order to pick the five horses that I will be using in my system. I use only four horses in a short field of seven horses or less.

.

I just finished looking at the first nine races and here are my top five horses for these races. Remember, the horses are rated from the best to the least, but ALL of them will be used in my betting system. For, if you have spent any time at all playing the harness racing game then you will appreciate that ANY horse can win a race. What we have done with my system is try and simplify things a bit and that is why I am using my top five picks in any given race.

.
MY PICKS
.

RACE 1: 5-1-8-2-4 Optional One dollar key bet: 5/8-4-2

RACE 4: 1-2-6-8-10 ( Optional ) Not applicable *

RACE 5: 7-1-3-6-5 ( Optional ) 7/3-1-5

RACE 6: 9-6-3-2-7 (Optional ) Not applicable

RACE 7: 3-2-4-10-8 ( Optional ) 3/2-10-9

RACE 8: 5-9-6-2-1 ( Optional ) Not applicable

RACE 9: 5-10-8-3-7 ( Optional ) 5/10-7-4
.
Friends, these are my tentative picks for today's racing at the Meadowlands. At the time of publication of this post I do not know about about any changes or scratches. Sometimes, scratches change the whole betting scheme and new numbers must be introduced. If there are no changes or scratches then the above numbers are the ones that I will be using.
.
HOW TO BET:
.
I use different methods when I am betting the Meadowlands and also Woodbine in Toronto.. My standard bet is a fourteen dollar one, using my top five picks as shown above. For example, in Race 1 here is how I will make my one dollar bets. The first bet that I will make is to box my top three horses and in Race 1 that is 5-1-8. So, I will purchase for six dollars a one dollar triactor box. All of the horses are covered in a box bet and it doesn't matter which one wins because I will have all of the bases covered.
.
My next bet will be to use the remaining horses in my combinations. Remember, any horse can win in any horse race. But, I have tried to narrow things down a bit with my handicapping. My system is not perfect or foolproof, but in my mind, I am getting my money's worth so to speak. Anyway, my next bets are all KEY BETS. A Key bet means that one horse must win the race, but it doesn't matter what happens with the other horses in the race; they can come in second or third in the triactor example.
.
Here is how I bring the rest of my horses in the betting pattern:
Remember, my horses in order of preference are: 5-1-8-2-4 and I have already boxed 5-1-8. I will now use horses 2 and 4. They will both be keyed to win and to come in second or third. Here are the one dollar key bets. Each individual bet costs two dollars because there are two combinations in each bet. Remember, the key horse ( the first horse before the slash ) has to win, but the others can place or show or come in second or third.
.
2/5-1
5/1-2
4/5-1
5/1-4
.
I have now just bet another 8 dollars for a total of 14 dollars. This is my standard bet. But, sometimes I will bet 24 dollars depending on the circumstances. Here is what a 24 dollar bet would look like using the five horses ( 5-1-8-2-4 ) in Race number 1. They are all key bets. The first horse HAS to win, but it doesn't matter how the other races end up, just as long as they are second or third.
.
5/1-8-2 ( six dollars )
1/5-8-2 ( six dollars )
8/5-1-2 ( six dollars )
2/5-1 ( two dollars )
4/5-1 ( two dollars )
5/1-4 ( two dollars )
Total bets equals 24 dollars.
.
Another consideration is to bet 60 dollars per race. I have never bet this amount of money on one race before, but if you do then you will be increasing your chances of winning. A 60 dollar bet would mean boxing your top five horses and it doesn't matter what happens just as long as any three of them are either first, second, or third.
.
I usually just bet 14 dollars per race, but sometimes I bet an extra 6 dollars and bet my Optional combinations. The reason I do this is because I might be missing one of the horses that I need to win. Also, you might even win two times if the right horses come in. The Optional Horse are a result of a bit of extra handicapping that I do. I am simply looking at an extra consideration or the ninth item on my list. However, my main system is based on eight considerations.
.
THREAT HORSES
.
Sometime in a race there is something that I term a " threat " horse. This horse is not part of my regular system and poses a threat to the vitality of my system. Usually these are horses coming off a qualifier, but there are other considerations as well. At any rate, they are horses that the system has not picked. You simply do not know how these horses are going to perform, so for an extra two dollars or sometimes four dollars I will use these horse winning over my top two horses. And, similarly I will have my top horse keyed to this threat horse as well as my third pick in my system.
.
SUMMARY
.
I hope this short introduction was helpful to you in understanding my harness triactor system. Nothing is perfect and my system is certainly no example of perfection. Remember, ANY horse can come out of nowhere and foil your best handicapping efforts and that is why you should view harness racing as a sport and as a form of entertainment and not as a sure fire way to make money. IT AIN'T GOING TO HAPPEN. Just be lucky if you break even on any given harness night. That is how I approach the sport. It is like going out to dinner on a Saturday night and getting somebody else to pay for your dinner. If you are lucky then that is what will happen. Remember, harness racing is a form of gambling and you have to be comfortable with the idea of losing money when you play this kind of sport. THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN HORSE RACING AND NONE FROM ME EITHER. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.
.
* Optional betting not applicable. You don't have to spend another six dollars to cover or back up a fourteen dollar ( spending 20 dollars on a race ) bet when the horses in the regular system ( 8 considerations ) do not conflict with the additional 9th feature. Hopefully, in the future I can show you a win where I have spent an exta 6 dollars that resulted in a win that would not be produced from my regular system.
